Lemur Conservation Project in Madagascar
My name is Emma Frater and I am an Undergraduate Student at Newcastle University.
I am studying Zoology BSc, a course which I enjoy immensely and which directed me towards getting involved as an active member of the Animal Welfare and Conservation Societies at University.
Recently, when researching how to spend my summer aiding conservation projects, I came across a UK based charity and Madagasgar-based NGO, Azafady (Registered Charity Number 107121).
It’s sole purpose is, ‘Conservation, Humanitarian and Sustainable Livelihood projects’ and works on a grass-roots basis to gather information and monitor changes in the ecosystem of several species of lemur.
‘Lemur Venture’ is Azafady’s conservation and Eco-Tourism project based in Madagascar. Despite being the fourth largest island in the world and home to some 80% of flora and fauna uniquely found there, poverty stricken Madagascar receives very little media attention.
I am thrilled to have been accepted onto the 4 week program, running from 7th July – 3rd August 08. In order to gain a place on the project, Azafady requires all volunteers to first raise £1,300 as a minimum donation to the charity to keep their vital work going and pay for essential costs for the trip while we are there.
In addition to this £1000 pre-departure costs are also needed for flights, a visa, vaccinations etc. Therefore I must raise the £2300 alone.
I’m sure that you can appreciate that although this once in a lifetime experience is entirely voluntary, it comes at a high premium.
However, this sum goes 100% to Madagascar so every penny raised does count.
By working on this program I will help the plight of the lemur firsthand, an ultimately necessary step when you consider that the island has suffered 90% deforestation.
Any help that you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated, no matter how small.
In return you would be helping a very valuable cause and can make a direct difference to the survival of an endangered species.
